What are your rates/processes for doing customized development for clients?
ID: 53 Category: BYZ Custom Development Information Status: Resolved Views: 2197

Question:
I'd like some customized development done, do you do that ? If so, is it restricted to only vpasp sites, or do you do work for/on other systems/languages too ?

What kind of payment options do you have, and do we need to make deposits etc ?

Have you got a general "how do we go about it ?" document to explain how you work?

Solution:

Yes, we do customized development, and it's not restricted to vpasp sites.

If you're after installing our addons, then the following page gives a rough guide to the normal amount of "points" (1 point equates to 1 minute of time) that would be needed for getting a given module installed into a fairly generic version of vpasp, but please remember that these estimates are just ballpark estimates and assume a fairly generic instance of vpasp:
Estimated "Points" Per Module:

1 point equates to 1 minute and currently costs £1, or you can buy priority points which are slightly more expensive but get a quicker service, or you can buy urgent points which get an immediate service; these are just ballpark figures to be used as a guide; every site's different, some take less time, some take more; depends on the layering of the addons and customisations etc.

Development points (normal service, currently £1/point, or £60/hour) -

Priority points (faster service, currently £1.08/point, or £64.80/hour) -

Emergency points (immediate service, currently £1.62/point, or £97.20/hour) -

VAT is payable on the rates above for UK customers.

When doing customized development we use an online timesheet reporting system which you have access to automatically whenever you've bought points, so that you can see the time/date/length of each "chunk" of work that we do (down to per-minute increments) and it also shows the details of exactly what we did on that "chunk" of time. So clients are able to check what's going on whenever they like by logging onto our bigyellowkey.com system and viewing the balances/timesheets for their projects (just visit the "my points" section from the customer control panel on the left for all your points/timesheet related info).

Because of the way that the timesheet reporting works and the fact that clients can access all their development info online, it means that clients can come back to us again whenever they want with quick/small or long/large new tasks/projects with virtually no admin needed on either side.

So, you'd just buy some points (if unsure about estimates, ask us what you want doing), and then we'd make the changes, and you'd be able to view your balance and timesheet info all in a single place.

For our coding-practices, here are some general standards that we adopt/use:

All our changes to things like asp files are properly commented, with the old/redundant code left-in (but commented-out) wherever possible. We always comment them with a "BYZ" text string because that string is something that'll never be used in other programs so you can easily do searches to find any customizations that we've done.

General commenting looks something like this:

'BYZ: 25-JAN-2006: Added a new config option for default category:

Dim xconfig_default_categoryid_on_home_page

xconfig_default_categoryid_on_home_page=55

We also make backups of files where possible before we change them, and give them this kind of file-naming for the backed-up files:

shopexd_20060125.asp

(ie filename_yyyymmdd.suffix)
